Siphon Life Spell

Vitalik Buterin has said that Blizzard nerfed the damage of his warlock’s Siphon Life spell in World of Warcraft — and that the experience had a surprisingly lasting impact on him. Here’s the quote he’s shared (from his personal website bio): “I happily played World of Warcraft during 2007–2010, but one day Blizzard removed the damage component from my beloved warlock’s Siphon Life spell. I cried myself to sleep that night, and on that day I realized what horrors centralized services can bring.” In the game, Siphon Life was a warlock ability that drained health from an enemy and returned it to the caster — a core part of certain warlock builds. When Blizzard rebalanced (or “nerfed”) it, Vitalik felt frustrated that something he enjoyed could be changed unilaterally by a central authority. That moment didn’t cause Ethereum directly, but it planted the seed: systems that rely on central control can arbitrarily change the rules — so he became interested in decentralized systems where no single party has that power.
